The five A’s

The 5 A’s of intervention are ask, advise, assess, assist, and arrange. These 5 prompts are often used by physicians to help patients stop using an addictive substance. For example.

  • Ask – do you race cars?
  • Advise – you do know racing cars is wasteful and dangerous, right?
  • Assess – are you ready to stop racing cars now?
  • Assist – I can help you sell your gear and car
  • Arrange – let’s meet next week with some others ex-racers

I what? Wait. Who hacked my account? Try this instead.

  • Ask – do you want to stop sucking at racing?
  • Advise – you know bad driving is dangerous, right?
  • Assess – are you ready to stop sucking now?
  • Assist – I can help you get started, try iRacing, it’s a great learning tool
  • Arrange – friend me on iRacing and we’ll train together

Here’s a clip produced by iRacing. They have some good instructional videos but the real learning happens on track.
