I suck at racing: part 1 of N

When it comes to suckage at racing, I’m certainly not immune. Here’s a good example.

I forgot to attach the hood pins because I was half asleep. A whole lot of other bad stuff happened that day too, but this was the most appropriate for the blog.

The previous day I was giving a seminar (on bioinformatics, because I don’t suck at that). My flight back was delayed and I didn’t land until well after midnight. By the time I arrived home and went to sleep it was after 2:00 AM. I had registered for a track day, and was very excited to find out how the offseason changes affected the car. Unfortunately, in order to get to the tack on time, I had to get up at 5:00 am to load the car, pack my gear, etc. So less than 3 hours of sleep. On top of that, I was doped up on two kinds of antihistamines because it was the only way I could still function. How could this possibly end well? Clearly, it didn’t. But part of being sleep-deprived is not having sound judgement.

After the hood incident, I could have made emergency repairs and gone back on track, but I went home instead. That was the first wise decision I made all day. Next time I’m going to… there’s actually a huge list of things I promise I’m doing and not doing in the future. I am feeling pretty lucky that all I need is a new hood and hinge. It could have been far worse.
